E3 2017: Sea of Thieves

The pirate’s life for me!

This game is a true console exclusive. This game is also about 715 liters of triple-distilled awesome.

Sea of Thieves is a Rare-developed action-adventure co-op pirate game.

That’s it. That’s all you need. You should be saving up pennies already for the eventual purchase. What is more awesome than co-op pirate play, I ask you?

Fine, I’ll write more about it. Happy?

It was first announced at E3 2015 and showed off a gameplay trailer last year, focusing on exploration, rum swilling, and ship-to-ship combat. This year’s trailer showed treasure hunt gameplay. It’s a fair bit longer than the last three titles shown, it’s narrated, and it looks amazing.

The key to this game is teamwork. No one scalawag can man a ship by his lonesome. Players team up and perform different roles on the ship, from helming, manning cannons, and readying the sails. During the gameplay trailer, it showed that teamwork can help your team get the most treasure possible and escaping with it. The treasure was underwater in the trailer; islands have caves that can also hide booty. The treasure is traded at an outpost for money.

The dangers consist of more than just other pirates. There are fierce sea monsters underwater, and skeletons roam the lands. The elements can also work against you, so you have to account for that.

Of course, you could choose to forego the treasure hunt and just spend your time downing ale. Your character will get drunk, too. The grog is also limitless. That’ll be an effective way of pickling your liver.

Sea of Thieves will debut in early 2018. If you want to catch some live gameplay, Rare is hosting a series of multiplayer matches that will be streamed on Mixer, Microsoft’s new streaming platform.
