For many in my age bracket, GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 is one of the most loved games of the 90s. A fan-made mod project for the PC is looking to rekindle the fun of GoldenEye multiplayer, and it succeeds in my eyes.
The game is called GoldenEye: Source, and it’s received its first big update in over three years. Like the name hints, it uses Valve’s Source engine. The mod is all about bringing the feel of the original’s multiplayer into the present. The game contains 25 maps based on original game locations, 10 different game modes, and all 28 original GoldenEye weapons.
Of the 13 characters you can play as, there is only one Bond. Unfortunately, he does not look like Pierce Brosnan. But you can select from iconic henchmen like Odd Job, May Day, and Jaws, so I am more than pleased.
Like I mentioned, this demo is multiplayer only. The developers insist that they will not add the aingle-player campaign to it. “No, we have no plans to make single-player as we do not have the resources or sufficient number of developers to create it,” reads the official FAQ.
Either way, the project looks really polished in its current state. For those that want to give it a try, head on over to the developers’ site to download. It is a standalone demo so you do not have to have another game installed. It will, however, need Steam in order to grab the Source binaries.
