Valhalla I am coming…
Before I go any further, I’d like to ask Hollywood for one small favor. Could you please lay off the old pop and rock songs for your trailers? It’s getting kinda old, guys. Yes, I know this is LED FUCKING ZEPPELIN on this trailer, but…seriously. I’m sure you folks have someone in the mail room who can string together a few notes. Just show a little originality for once.
With that being said…Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song seems like a pretty good choice for the long-awaited Thor: Ragnarok teaser trailer. Not only is it an interesting play on Thor’s plight here, but the song sounds appropriately epic for the scope this movie promises. Oh, and Valhalla is literally mentioned in the song.
The entire plotline for Thor: Ragnarok can be inferred from the title itself, but the teaser shows a bit of it. In Norse mythology, Ragnarök is an apocalyptic event where some gods are killed. Among them are Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Heimdall (Idris Elba), and even Odin (Anthony Hopkins) himself. The teaser hints at it some, with the Asgardian goddess of death, Hela (Cate Blanchett), razing Asgard to the bone.
The main theme of the Thor: Ragnarok trailer seems to revolve around Thor’s travels after Asgard falls. He lands on a strange planet and is captured. It’s at this point the trailer acquaints us with the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), who likes pitting beings against one another in gladiatorial combat. Thor is thrust into a coliseum, where he has to face off against WORLD WAR HULK!
Okay, it’s not the proper World War Hulk from the comics, but he does have the armor and the unagreeable disposition. Regardless, it’s the part of the upcoming movie that has been teased and has the general hero-loving populace frothing at the mouth.
Punctuating every bit of the trailer’s juicy action – from Hela catching and SMASHING Thor’s trusty hammer Mjölnir with one hand, to Thor and Hulk leaping at each other in slow motion – is Led Zeppelin’s epic song. I still stand by what I said earlier: Hollywood really needs to stop ripping through WEA’s back catalog for catchy tunes. At least this song is as epic in scope as the movie seems to be.
Thor: Ragnarok is set to release on November 3rd. By then, we’re sure to see more of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who is notably absent from this trailer. Hey, at least we got Hulk and Thor!
Update: I have two articles I’m trying to finish. I have work I need to do. Still, I can’t stop watching this trailer. Marvel Studios, I apologize for ragging on you for putting Immigrant Song in this trailer. I CAN’T GET THE FUCKING SONG OUT OF MY HEAD!!! AND I SEE THOR SINGING IT IN MY BRAIN!!!
