Sony has made it official: the Playstation 4K is real.
The high-end console, rumored to be codenamed “Neo”, was confirmed by Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment while speaking to the Financial Times. House confirmed that the upgraded console would be more expensive than the current $350 model, but is not meant as a replacement for it.
“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” he said. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”
House added that the upgraded PS4 is intended for hardcore gamers and would support 4K televisions. The console also seems to be primed to provide a smoother experience for the upcoming PlayStation VR, Sony’s answer to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Also, House downplayed the fears of gamers and developers who have worried that an upgraded console would mean having two versions of a game or, worse, exclusive games for the more powerful console. “All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4.”
Sony will not be formally introducing the new PS4 during E3. House said that Sony wanted to wait until there was enough content to show off the upgraded console’s capabilities before unveiling it. He also did not want to speculate on a price for the upgraded console. Previously, it was rumored that it would sell for $399.
