Turtle Rock Studios No Longer Supporting Evolve

Turtle Rock Studios, the development team behind Evolve, has announced that they will no longer be supporting the game, effective immediately. The game’s servers will, however stay online “for the foreseeable future.”

The announcement was made in a blog post by Turtle Rock’s co-founder Chris Ashton. In the post, he clarified that Evolve is not owned by Turtle Rock and they did not make the decision to end support for the game.

“This is the life of AAA game developers who aren’t self-funded and down own their own IP,” Ashton wrote. “We don’t get to make the call. We all know that going in but we still sign the dotted line because we love what we do. We are happy to have gotten the opportunity to do something risky, something new and innovative.”

2K Games, the publisher of Evolve, will continue maintaining the game’s servers. The game will also remain free-to-play for its duration. 2K was involved in the push for Evolve: Stage 2, the free-to-play version, and wants to keep it that way.

One apparent casualty of the move is the console ports of Evolve: Stage 2. Turtle Rock was planning to bring the game to consoles but “it looks like that’s just not meant to be.”

Evolve was first released in 2015 to high anticipation. It was initially successful, but soon began to falter. Many players who enjoyed the game were turned off by the crazy amount of downloadable content and multiple confusing Season Passes.
