Four years after the fact, Animal Crossing: New Leaf is getting a new lease on life.

Nintendo is giving the 3DS title new content, including amiibo and card support. There are no specifics on what new functionality the amiibo will provide, but the cards will prompt specific villagers to arrive in town. Nintendo will also start bringing in characters from other franchises. Nintendo has said that Callie and Marie from Nintendo’s Splatoon will enter the Animal Crossing sphere.

“What about amiibo from other series?” a Japanese Nintendo page asks. The site shows some Splatoon characters in the Animal Crossing universe, and hints that maybe amiibo from other Nintendo franchises will eventually unlock future content.

The tweet below shows some Splatoon stuff. My Japanese is rusty – as in, I don’t know Japanese – but I’m assuming it talks about how Splatoon amiibo will unlock the content shown.
