According to Kotaku, Destiny 2 will launch on PC as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Kotaku credited “several sources” with the news.
The game, due out sometime in 2017, has hit a few development snags. One of the snags is that developer Bungie is a bit more ambitious with the new game. They want Destiny 2 to be more than a glorified expansion. In the process, however, they may have had to scuttle a few planned features. Most notable among these is the player’s ability to use their character from Destiny.
This is not something trivial. When Bungie first pushed Destiny, they made it a point to say that player characters could be carried over for a full decade, through expansions, DLC, and sequels. Now, characters who have hundreds of hours invested in them may fall by the wayside. Assuming they go through with this, Bungie will likely give players with old characters something. This, however, has not been confirmed.
The rumor about Destiny 2 on the PC first popped up on NeoGAF. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier added confirmation from his sources. He also adds that there has been a lot of staff reorganization at Bungie. Quite a few veteran staffers have left the company, including longtime boss Howard Ryan. Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, the lead developers on the Taken King expansion, now helm the game. And estimated 750+ employees are hard a t work on the sequel. The hope is that it will launch in the fall of 2017.
