E3 Impressions: Mass Effect: Andromeda

E3 Impressions: Mass Effect: Andromeda

After tons of talk and speculation, Mass Effect: Andromeda was officially revealed during EA’s E3 conference – in trailer form only.

The much-anticipated fourth entry in the Mass Effect series rockets players to Andromeda at the edge of Milky Way galaxy. From the trailer, it seems planetary exploration will be a big focus of gameplay, and the game will also allow you to visit a planet’s moons as well. That is a departure from previous titles, but one that I feel many would actually enjoy, myself included. The M35 Mako makes an appearance in the trailer; one would imagine it will be used to facilitate travel on planetary surfaces. There is activity in space as well, of course, and there we get a look at the Tempest, a craft similar to the Normandy in the original trilogy, as well as what looks to be a rebuilt Citadel.

Also like the original trilogy, there will be a host of alien races in the game, including some that Mass Effect veterans recognize. The trailer gives us a good look at an Asari, and I may have caught a glimpse at a Yahg and a Krogan. There will be, I would think, more races to discover, as well as new creatures to deal with on other planets…including a thresher maw? The trailer has something that looks like one pop out of the ground.

The last thing of note in the trailer is what looks to be the reveal of our main protagonist. Whereas a male Sam Shepard was the face of the original Mass Effect trilogy, it seems this game will feature a female protagonist. If the Mass Effect formula holds true, players will be able to select their gender anyway, but it looks like EA and BioWare want a female face for Mass Effect: Andromeda, and that’s a good thing.

We will have to stay tuned for more information about Mass Effect: Andromeda.
