The classic FPS renaissance is in full swing, and Quake: Champions is the next title in line.
After the runaway success of last year’s Doom and 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, you just knew it was only a matter of time before Bethesda dipped back to the nostalgia well for this classic. Behold Quake Champions, an arena-based twitch FPS that harkens back to the days of Quake 4 Arena and Unreal Tournament.
While id Software and Bethesda didn’t reveal too much about the game, preferring to wait until August 4th during QuakeCon, some tidbits were divulged. The will feature a “diverse cast of warriors” that have different skills and attributes. The game is reportedly designed to be equally enjoyable by newbies (like me) and seasoned vets alike. They also mentioned that Quake: Champions will run at 120Hz on PC and will have its framerate completely unlocked, lending to the game’s fast gameplay.

Bethesda released a trailer, but no gameplay footage. That makes it impossible to get a good feel for how the game will play. The trailer does convey the attitude and the fast pace that the classic Quake series is known for. Past that, we can only speculate until QuakeCon. I’m a fan of the original Quake games on PC and look forward to seeing more about this game.
