When Microsoft closed Lionhead Studios in April of this year, it also canned its latest project, Fable Legends. However, some former Lionhead devs have been given permission by Microsoft to use the Fable license on another project.
The project, Fable Fortune, is a collectible card game (CCG) in the realm of Blizzard’s Hearthstone and had been in hush-hush development for 18 months prior to Lionhead’s closure. When Lionhead closed, former Lionhead devs Mike West, Craig Oman, and Marcus Lynn went on to work under the name Flaming Fowl. First on their list was to ask Microsoft for permission to continue working on Fable Fortune.
“We approached Microsoft – hoping for the best, prepared for a corporate hand to the face. To our delight they were very open to the idea and agreed to grant us the license for Fable Fortune,” said Flaming Fowl.
The license is only for Fable Fortune, not for any other Fable game. Still, that was a pretty magnanimous of Microsoft.
Fable Fortune is currently listed on Kickstarter for funding. As of this writing, 303 backers pledged $15,785 of the $365,385 goal with 28 days to go. If funding is secured, the game will be released on PC and Xbox One, with iOS and Android versions to follow.
