A Hand-Carved Mini SNES that Shames 3D Printers

Nowadays, 3D printing has revolutionized how tinkerers and hobbyists approach their projects. This is especially true of gaming enthusiasts who want to build their own projects. The Mini NES that I wrote about in July – and I still dream about – is an example of the wonders 3D printing can achieve.

It is more amazing, however, to see a true craftsman design a mini system with only his hands. I present you lyberty5, an absolutely gifted artist who has created a tiny, fully functional SNES out of clay!

The build is painstaking but glossed over too quickly to fully appreciate. He was able to craft a Super Famicom shell out of clay, carve out the necessary details, and paint it meticulously to achieve the proper look. A Raspberry PI Zero handles the emulation duties, and a little custom soldering and gluing handles the task of providing front-mounted USB ports. The resulting product is smaller than an original SNES controller, and is beautiful!

I absolutely love everything about this project. I only wish that I could mimic his artistry on my own. Unfortunately, I have the artistic talent of a bicycle wheel missing 80% of its spokes. If I make enough money, maybe I could throw it at him and get one. If not, I have to do it myself…and lose at least three fingers and a toe in the process.

He has been playing video games for longer than he would like to admit, and is passionate about all retro games and systems. He also goes to bars with an NES controller hoping that entering the Konami code will give him thirty chances with the drunk chick at the bar. His interests include vodka, old-school games, women, vodka, and women gamers who drink vodka.
