New Residents
I’m the anointed “old-school gaming specialist” of Digital Crack. That doesn’t mean I play ONLY retro games; it means that the majority of my gaming life has been spent playing games that are now considered retro. As a result of my history with gaming, I have amassed a library of older games that I love and still play to this day. One of my favorite old-school series is Resident Evil, and among my favorite games in the series are Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Zero for the GameCube. I fire up those discs every chance I get and still enjoy them.
Well, I guess we can scratch off Resident Evil Zero from the list of “old” games, because Capcom has decided to grace us with Resident Evil 0 HD Remastered. Scheduled for release on January 19, 2016, the game is Capcom’s answer to the age-old question, “If we remaster a game that maybe three people want to have remastered, will you love us again?”
Look, I get that remasters like this one are usually meant for a crowd that never played the original. I also get that hardcore fans of the series (and I’m not hardcore enough) will probably salivate at the prospect of another HD remake of a Resident Evil game. But from my vantage, all I see is another company trying to hype people up by spray-painting some HD shine on a decade-old game, just to get some love for doing something other than ruining most of their franchises. I’m supposed to feel joy over this?
When I bought the newer consoles, I was hoping to have NEW experiences. Instead, I have spent most of this generation ignoring all the old games that game publishers want me to buy again! Really? You’re gonna try sell me God of War III again, this time with more shine? What’s that? I get to play Devil May Cry, but with more white in Dante’s hair? Be still my fucking heart!
I’m not trying to crap on the experience for those who want this. For those gamers that like the idea of remastered “classics” like The Last of Us and Uncharted, more power to you. Enjoy the shit out of the games and don’t worry about what I say. As for me, I’ll pop my old GameCube disc back in the console and keep it nostalgic.
And for those asking, I’m not a hipster…I’m old school!
