One more day!

By Eric Goldman

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

What a final sequence! As this week’s iZombie ended with Les Miserables’ “One More Day” building to a crescendo, while Liv, Ravi and Major triumphantly dug up two corpses (freeze frame included!), I thought, “Well, this certainly is not something you’d see on other shows!”

It was an incredibly entertaining, out there way to close the episode and even though we’re less than two months into the year, I think it’s cemented itself as one of the TV highlight moments of 2016.

And best of all, it wrapped up another really strong episode for the show!

Once more, the murder Clive and Liv were investigating was tied into the central plot, as Major and Ravi found a body that turned out to belong to a man who worked for Mr. Boss. iZombie continues to find new and funny personalities to throw at Liv (and Rose McIver) and having her turn into a pathological liar this week was another great one.

We can bemoan it taking awhile in the first place, but it was also very gratifying to see Clive really zero in on Liv acting like the victim for each episode case they are on. Liv’s cover as a psychic still gives her some wiggle room here as far as an explanation, but this feels like a little bit of an opening to Clive eventually finding out the truth.

There was just a ton to enjoy this episode, including Blaine hysterically trying to fool his unfrozen father (good to see you again, Robert Knepper) that decades had passed and Blaine himself was now an old man who had experienced “the zombie apocalypse, the rapture, the ginger rapture.”

We also got a bit more insight into what shaped Blaine when we found out about his childhood nanny, who was outright physically abusive while his father did nothing – and in fact, rewarded her with millions of dollars in his will. I’m glad the show isn’t attempting to suddenly redeem Blaine (and in fact, he seems as awful as ever), but some more info on how he turned out this way is welcome, as far as giving our villain an origin story.

Things just keep getting worse for Major, huh? Blaine now coercing him to target zombies on his list he approves is just another thing to add to Major’s ever-growing list of concerns… and Bozzio and Clive spotting Major in a photo with Blaine is going to cause more trouble he’s not even aware of yet.

So what to make of Drake at this point… He’s definitely a much shadier character than he’s let Liv know, but is he truly a killer? He seemed to have no issue with performing a hit for Boss, but then botched it so badly (he could have just shot the guy, instead of sitting there and talking to him) that it leaves the door open for him having another agenda, especially since we didn’t see how that fight ended. On the other hand, we already have Major performing the role of “would-be hitman who’s actually not killing those he’s been sent after”, so I’m hoping there’s something else going on with Drake. But this show is so clever, I’m certainly giving it the benefit of a doubt.

The Verdict

Man, this was a busy iZombie! Poor New Hope dropped dead as well, adding a ticking time bomb element to both Blaine and Major’s very existence, unless something changes for one or both of them. With the show embracing its serialized side like never before, while still allowing Liv to take on a new persona each week, this is one of the most consistently entertaining series on the air right now.

  1. Hi Eric, do you happen to know whether this: “the zombie apocalypse, the rapture, the ginger rapture, the great floods…” is a quote from a movie? and if yes, which one is it? Blaine goes on to quote Planet of the Apes and GoT, so I wonder if this is also a reference to a film, maybe an old Romero movie I have never seen coz I only started watching those movies when Zombies started moving FAST ;o)
your help would be much appreciated, cheers!
