Ultron confirmed as playable in trailer
For those who are still hyped up after the Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite Story Trailer released yesterday, some more eye candy has surfaced. A gameplay for the fighting game has leaked. While the video itself is not extremely high-quality, it does give us a glimpse into how the game’s combat and many systems will function.
The first thing I notice while watching the gameplay video is that it’s very reminiscent of the original Marvel vs Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes from 1999. The combat is 2v2, something already known from December 2016’s gameplay reveal. The gameplay also shows some of the Infinity Stones in action. In one segment, Chris Redfield activates the Time Stone. When he does, the screen is tinged green and he seems to move faster than his opponent, Thor in this case. He also has the ability to quickly travel back and forth. Another segment has Chun-Li activate her Power Stone the unleashing her Level 3 Super, pummeling Redfield and taking about 40% of his health bar in one shot. The most impressive, however, was Ultron activating a Space Stone, which imprisons his opponent, Hulk, in a box. Hulk is unable to escape the box, while Ultron can jump in and out at will.
Of course, that segment confirms that Ultron will be a playable character. Sigma, the other half of the final boss, is also playable but as a DLC character. There is no word yet on if Ultron will also be DLC.
Other signature Marvel vs Capcom mechanics make appearances in this gameplay video. Air and tag combos show up, as well as assists. Hawkeye and Thor show off new Level 3 Super Combos, with Thor’s looking particularly brutal. There are a lot of OTG (off-the-ground) combos on display as well, far more than could be performed in Marvel vs Capcom 3. And the pace is just as frenetic as you would expect from an entry in this series.
One thing to keep in mind while watching this video is that this looks to be an early build. The game seems to be running at about 720p30, which is far from optimal for a fighting game. Also, the backgrounds don’t look all that impressive. I know it seems silly to criticize the game’s backgrounds, but it’s the series’ own fault. Earlier entries went ham with background detail, so the natural expectation is to see the same here.
So far, Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite seems to be right on track. The characters kick ass, the fighting is hectic, and the aerial and tag juggling is intact. Although I haven’t forgiven Capcom for the shenanigans they committed with Street Fighter V, I’m at least intrigued enough by what’s on offer here that I’m considering the purchase. And, I mean, have you SEEN the Collector’s Edition? I’m seriously considering that purchase just for the goodies!
