Longtime Mega Man fans haven’t had a new game of substance in a while. While Capcom seems to be in no hurry to resurrect him for new games, Inti Creates is itching to bring back the last two games in the mainline series.
Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 are notable for being the only mainline games to not have a physical release. They were released via WiiWare, PlayStation Network (PSN), and Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) in 2008 and 2010, respectively. They were also great homages to the original NES games, right down to their awesome chiptune soundtracks and punishing gameplay.
Inti Creates, which co-developed the games with Capcom, recently spoke to Rockman Corner. They gave their take on a possible re-release of Mega Man 9 and 10 on current-gen consoles and Steam:
“In order to do something like that, the folks at Capcom would have to be the ones to make it happen.
While it (sic) true we developed the games, we do not own the rights to those games, and thus could never do such a thing unless Capcom wanted it to happen. On a personal level, I think that would be great, but unfortunately it’s not up to me, hehe.”
Now say what you want about Capcom and its seeming desire to put the Blue Bomber out to pasture. But they’ve never been asses about securing re-releases for his games. Mega Man 2 is slated to appear as one of 30 games in Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition. There have also been plenty of compilations and digital re-releases of the classic games.
Would Capcom allow the re-release of Mega Man 9 and 10? I would like to think so. Maybe fan interest will goad them into greenlighting it. At the very least, an Xbox One Backward Compatibility version would be a cinch. Here’s to hoping Capcom allows those two gems to hit the current-gen consoles.
