During a Windows 10 event, Microsoft announced it is partnering with other companies to ship a new line of virtual reality headsets for their operating system. The VR headsets are expected to “start at $299.”
Microsoft’s partners – Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo – will be shipping headsets with their own branding. The headsets will include inside –out tracking sensors, which obviate the need for external cameras or lasers like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift require. The headsets are still wired, however, unlike Oculus’ Santa Cruz prototype.
According to Microsoft, these VR headsets are intended to work “with affordable laptops and PCs” and not require “a separate room and complicated setup,” something Oculus and HTC currently require. If you remember, Microsoft is also working on HoloLens, its augmented reality headset aimed at a more technophile audience. There was no word on an Xbox One-ready VR headset at the event, which was PC-centric.
