New clip named “Buiilding Jump”
As Ghost in the Shell moves closer to its March 31st release date, more information about the movie is being shared. Dreamworks has released a new movie clip for Ghost in the Shell. This clip, clocking in at 4:44, shows a bigger slice of the dinner scene that’s been teased in previous trailers. All the elements are there. The creepy geisha bots are still creepy. Major (Scarlett Johanssen) is standing at the edge a building’s roof surveilling. The geisha bots become creepy spider-bots as a team of hit men enters the dining room, guns blazing. Major freefalls from the building while cloaking to engage the hit men. All these beats echo the original anime closely, though not completely.
The scene also delves into the level of proliferation that cyber enhancements and robotics have achieved in this era. Much like the original anime, the movie looks like it wants to explore the moral question of cyber enhancement and the loss of human soul and individuality if taken too far. That’s one of the core struggles for our protagonist in the anime; I’m wondering if this movie’s protagonist will go through the same introspection.
For now, everything that I’ve seen of the Ghost in the Shell movie tells me they’re trying to remain to the anime. Come March 31st, we shall see.
