With all the issues surrounding No Man’s Sky, I’m glad I didn’t jump in right away.
In a post on the No Man’s Sky subreddit, user Dark_Nexis reports that once he returned to his starting system, many of the objects he renamed were reset. All of the custom names for creatures, locations, and plants were gone, returned to their pre-discovery state. Funny thing is, Dark_Nexis was still credited at the person who discovered the planet and star system, and those names were retained.
Soon enough, more reports started pouring in. Another user, Ultrasilvanus, confirmed the issue. He also noticed that the objects lost their names in the order they were discovered. That led people to believe that there was a max number of things a person can name before they started being wiped in order. Many believe that keeping a persistent database of names must chew up a large amount of memory, so the name purging is necessary.
Hello Games, developer of No Man’s Sky, has not made any comments about this issue. They have been working to address the myriad of other issues plaguing the game. It may take some time to sort out this mess.
