In a rather odd twist, No Man’s Sky will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription in order to play it when it launches on August 9th.
Considering the game is set in a universe with significant online infrastructure, it’s a foregone conclusion that it is a multiplayer game. Hence, the game would need PlayStation Plus to play, as PlayStation Plus is required to play with or against other players online. However, both Sony and No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games agree that the possibility of players to spot each other is so remote that the game has been categorized as a single-player title. Therefore, PlayStation Plus does not apply to the game.
In an interview with Game Informer, Sony stated that while PlayStation Plus is not necessary to play the games, “you will need to be connected to the Internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas.” The discoveries, of course, refer to the game’s ability to discover and name planets and the species the planets house.
Sony required a PlayStation Plus subscription to play online content since the PlayStation 4 debuted in 2013. The service, which was available for free on the PlayStation 3, costs $49.99 for a yearly subscription.
