As if playing Pokemon GO wasn’t dangerous enough, police in O’Fallon, Missouri have more dire news.
According to a Facebook post on the O’Fallon Missouri Police Department’s page, armed robbers seem to be targeting Pokemon GO players. This is their statement:
“This morning at approximately 2 AM we responded to the report of an armed robbery near the intersection of Highway K and Feise Road. We were able to locate four suspects occupying a black BMW a short time later and recover a handgun. These suspects are suspected of multiple armed robberies both in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. It is believed these suspects targeted their victims through the Pokemon Go smartphone application.
“Many of you have asked how the app was used to rob victims, the way we believe it was used is you can add a beacon to a pokestop to lure more players. Apparently they were using the app to locate ppl standing around in the middle of a parking lot or whatever other location they were in.”
When asked about how it was determined that the suspects were using Pokemon GO, they would not say. However, Sgt. Robert Kendall did add this:
“We arrested all four suspects and recovered a handgun. We felt it important for our residents’ safety to share what we did know and remind them to be cognizant of their safety and surroundings.”
So there you have it. Be careful where you go and what is around you when you go out hunting for virtual Pokemon. And always remember:
If your weekend includes looking for #Eevee on #PokemonGO, please do so safely. No Pokemoning from behind the wheel. pic.twitter.com/Kt9CmTOKiP
