Psyonix’s Rocket League has proven to be quite the performer. Released more than a year ago, the vehicular soccer game has sold 7 million copies. In fact, it has sold 2 million copies alone since June 2016.
Curiously, Psyonix also confirmed that there have been more than 20 million players in Rocket League. Though it may seem that the numbers make sense, a little research explains the discrepancy.
First the game was given for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers in July 2015. Those players do not count towards the number of sold copies. The freebie may also explain why Psyonix claims the PS4 is the #1 platform for the game. Also, individual users are accounted for, and that includes second players in split-screen co-op games. Add up all those players and the 20 million ceiling is justified.
The best thing about the game is how much the game has been supported. Psyonix has continually added more content to Rocket League. In September, they will be releasing an update that will add Rumble more to the game. That mode will introduce randomized power-ups to the game that will mix up the core soccer-with-cars action.
