Rockstar Games’ 2005 The Warriors has made it onto the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation4. The game, a take on the 1979 cult film, was originally released for the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 in 2005. It was released for the PlayStation 3 in 2013 via PSN as well. This is not a remaster, however. It is the original game, upscaled to 1080p and supporting trophies.
The Warriors features beat-em-up gameplay and an action-adventure narrative. Players assume the roles of the members of the eponymous gang. The game takes place before, during, and after the film’s events. They will roam through late-70s New York City in a limited open-world fashion, doing the things you would expect from a gang in that era: loot and steal anything of value that isn’t nailed down and beat down rival gangs in hostile turf. Gangs from the film are recreated here, including the Turnbull AC’s and the iconic Baseball Furies.
The original game has the feel of the film right down to the intro sequence and the score. From Cyrus’ speech to the epic showdown with Luther at Coney Island to the DJ playing Joe Walsh’s “In the City”, the callbacks are plentiful.
The Warriors is available on PSN for the PS4 for $14.99. Those of you who have a PS3 can still get that version for $9.99.
