Warning: There are spoilers ahead, but I will not spoil everything. Some things are better kept for you, the reader, to see firsthand.
Supergirl, which originally aired at CBS, is now with the CW. This time, she brought her cousin with her on the very first episode of the Second Season. So we pick up right after the season finale were Kara opens up the pod to find out that there is someone within it. But who is he? A couple of months ago, we were told who the character will be, but for this episode’s sake, let’s say we have no idea since he hasn’t been revealed too much.
After so many years saying that the movie characters cannot be within the TV universe = especially the big three – we get the Man of Steel within the Girl of Steel’s universe. Now, Clark Kent, AKA Superman…well, he was meh. I didn’t like him but I also didn’t hate him. Tyler’s role as Clark was done well; he plays the clumsy nerdy guy, something similar to Christopher Reeve but not the same. Tyler’s role as Superman was a little better than his Clark. He’s not serious, so he’s not the same Superman that we are currently seeing within the Expanded Universe. Thank God, because we don’t need Superman to be brooding here. Leave that to Batman and Oliver Queen.
This episode was mostly about Kara finding out about herself, since last season it was mostly about Kara finding about her role as Supergirl. But by doing that, she is forgetting to balance both lives. Clark reminds Kara that being Kara is also as important as being Supergirl. You can’t be one without the other. But I did enjoy seeing both actors play off each other. Tyler plays a big brother role to Melissa’s character, even though they are cousins within the show.
Now one spoiler here is that there is some issue between Superman and Martian Manhunter. It’s later explained throughout the episode, but I am leaving it as that. We do get a Luthor this season, which is interesting since Lex is in prison. Can this be the same Lex that is locked up in Batman v Superman? Lena Luthor, the sister of Lex, is now running the family company, trying to make a better name for the Luthors.
The pacing was a little slow at times, since they had too many things happening at the same time. Mixing the story with both Kara and Clark, and then bringing Lena Luthor and a hitman into the series, leaves a lot of things forgotten into the background. We only see the mystery guest from the pod twice. Kara has to make a decision about what she wants to do, since her boss gave her a choice to make since last season.
Things felt rushed in my opinion. Supergirl does have action but it was never really action-based, just more towards drama. When there is action, it is sometimes passablein other cases. But this time it was enjoyable. We get not only hand-to-hand combat but also we see the two Kryptonians using their powers to save people.
A lot of the main characters from Season One felt like background characters and should have not even been on this episode. This was a bumpy episode for being the first episode of the Second Season on a new network. I do hope that everything starts to smooth out, but it probably won’t smooth out until Superman is no longer a part of the episodes. The reveal in the end does lead up to what happens on next episode, so I cannot wait to see what happens on there. I did enjoy this episode even though it had it’s ups and downs, but I know this show is in good hands in the CW.
