The Call of Duty series started out on PC. You wouldn’t think that, though, with the way the series has been treated on the platform. The Call of Duty: Black Ops III PC port was mangled by Activision, just like the last couple of CoD games before it. The series now shines on consoles.
Activision looks to be changing that perception – slightly – with the latest update, 15.1. The new update adds mod tools to Black Ops III, something that was locked out by the developer at launch. The new tools allow players to build their own levels and tweak any assets, among other things. Of course, cheating and other unseemly acts are a concern, so modded creations can only be used in Unranked Server Browser or Custom Game lobbies.
“Many of you have expressed interest in testing the tools, so we are very excited to open up access to the whole community. We also want to thank all of the Alpha testers for their support in getting the tools ready for Open Beta,” the patch notes on the game’s Steam Community page said. “The tools and related in-game features are all still in Beta testing phase so expect some updates along the way. Your feedback will be very valuable in helping us find and address the most important issues, so thank you in advance for your support.”
Those who purchased Black Ops III on Steam can access the tools by going into the Tools tab. The modded levels can be played by anyone, whether they use the tools or not.
