“I couldn’t lose anyone. I couldn’t lose any more of them. I couldn’t lose you.” – Carol
Here we are once more. I did miss last week’s episode review, but life happened and I could not make it on time. But at least we have this week’s episode. As usual, there will be slight spoilers ahead.
Since Gabriel just left Alexandria, Rick and a few of the crew went to look for him. Well, they found Gabriel, but he wasn’t alone. Knowing that they are outnumbered against the Saviors, there are a few people who want to help from hilltop. The Kingdom doesn’t want to join the fight, so who is left to assist? Rick found a group of new strangers that have kidnapped Gabriel, and as they put it, they take what they want, they do not disturb or something like that.
The same offer was given to the new group: join them to defeat the Saviors. The new group decided to put Rick onto a test, with a zombie that looks like he belonged within the Hellraiser movies. Seriously, with all the spikes coming out of the zombie, he felt out of place within the show. We do get some more of the Kingdom. Ezekiel, still hesitant on wanting to go forward and attack the Saviors, is still providing them with half. We did a get a Mexican standoff, but it was short-lived. Of course, Ezekiel has Richard back down before it gets worse. I know the show has to build up to the war that was done in the comic and build the courage that Ezekiel does eventually get, but damn he is a coward. Yes, I know he is trying to keep his people alive, but with the Saviors around, his people will never be safe no matter what he thinks.
Daryl does eventually meet up with Carol and they have a heart-to-heart. Carol explains why she left as she couldn’t lose anyone else. If she lost anyone due to the Saviors she would go and kill them all and lose herself within the process. When asked how everyone back in Alexandria was doing, Daryl lied to her. He did the right thing in that part and a lot of people would see that as something that would bite him in the ass later. But Daryl doesn’t see it as he lied to her to be a dick, he did it to protect whatever left of humanity she may have left and not lose herself to whatever darkness she feels.
This episode was slow and a little boring at some points, but it is building to something a lot bigger in the end. This episode is a lighter episode than we are used to, with very little gore since people have complained about the gore of the show. The pacing was decent but again, felt slow at some points. The heart-to-heart moment was something that was needed because those are few within the show that we get, but next week we get to see what Negan is going to do to Eugene after he took him during the mid-season finale.
So what were your thoughts on this episode? What did you like and what did you dislike about the episode?
