For the third month in a row, data tracking site NPD Group has announced that the Microsoft Xbox One is the best-selling console in the US. GfK Entertainment, UK confirms that the console was also the top-seller in the UK for September.
Microsoft’s console first topped the US console sales charts in July. It continued into August following the release of the Xbox One S that month. Since then, however, Microsoft has kept its momentum. This follows a very long streak where Sony’s PlayStation 4 were tops in US sales.
Part of Sony’s tumble for September could be blamed on the announcement on the PlayStation 4 Pro earlier that month. Sony also released the $300 PlayStation 4 Slim that month, which was hoped to boost the console line’s sales some. But the release of the PS4 Pro next month seems to be giving prospective PS4 buyers a reason to wait.
Microsoft was quick to jump out with the news, adding that it was the only current-generation console to sell more in September 2016 than it did at the same time last year in the US, UK, and Australian markets. It also mentioned that Forza Horizon 3 was the best-selling first-party game. That was a given, seeing as neither Nintendo nor Sony had any big first-party releases scheduled for September.
It’s only fair to note that although the Xbox One is enjoying a three-month streak for top console sales, it wasn’t the best-selling system in July. That distinction belonged to Nintendo’s handheld 3DS. The Xbox One did take the top spot overall for August.
NPD Group’s report will be released to the public next week.
