Indie Game Lookout for June 30, 2016

After weeks of trying to find a theme for this column, I feel like I have succeeded. Granted, it happened accidentally, but I’ll take it. The three indie games I’m spotlighting this week are games that have successfully navigated Steam Greenlight. With so many deserving games vying for attention in Greenlight, it’s great to see games like these getting enough votes to make it through. In these cas...[Read More]

Project Scorpio: New Xbox One or Something Else?

After watching Microsoft’s E3 2016 conference, I was livid. The source of my anger was their official reveal of Project Scorpio, their planned upgraded version of the Xbox One. The reveal was not a surprise; it was mentioned along with the Xbox 360 S, their slimmer Xbox One, a couple of days prior to the conference. But seeing and hearing it confirmed by Microsoft made my “Hulk Smash” instincts po...[Read More]

Battlefield 4 and Hardline Getting New UI

Battlefield 4 was a bug-riddled mess when it was released three years ago. DICE, however, has never stopped fixing and fine-tuning the game. Soon, it and its successors are getting an all-new user interface that will make it easier to set up squads. The new user interface will be rolled out to Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, and Battlefield 1. It will allow players to create squads before a g...[Read More]

E3 Impressions: Microsoft Conference

The entire time I was watching Microsoft’s E3 conference, I kept looking up. I imagined the sword of Damocles dangling over my head, in the form of a product unveiling. At the end of the conference, the sword finally fell. Up to that point, Microsoft’s conference was pretty decent. After the unveiling, all I wanted was to scream. Oh, and remove that sword from my brain. I’ll get to my rant about t...[Read More]

E3 Impressions: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Mentioning Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare online tends to elicit very radical responses from “impassioned” fans. Many of the responses are negative, and some are vitriolic.  I have prepared myself for these. I have my Kevlar helmet on, my bulletproof vest strapped on, and my AR-15 loaded and ready. Bring it! OK, I’m not loaded or armored; the only thing loaded in this house is me, and the most arm...[Read More]

E3 Impressions: South Park: The Fractured But Whole

I thoroughly enjoyed 2014’s South Park: The Stick of Truth. The upcoming follow-up. South Park: The Fractured But Whole, looks like a game I will be thoroughly enjoying upon release. Ubisoft San Francisco and South Park Digital Studios, LLC have teamed up again to deliver this sequel. It’s the day after the events of The Stick of Truth, and the boys of South Park have traded in their fantasy garb ...[Read More]

E3 Impressions: Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Ubisoft gameplay trailers scare me. After Assassin’s Creed: Unity, Watch Dogs, and The Division showed the company’s propensity for exaggerating a game’s visuals and gameplay, I take anything I see in their trailers with a metric ton of salt. I went into their conference with this mindset, and Ubi tested me immediately with the gameplay demo for their first title, Ubisoft Paris’s Ghost Recon: Wild...[Read More]

E3 Impressions: Halo Wars 2

I’ve been a fan of Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games ever since the Warcraft series on PC, so it’s a given that I would try out the original Halo Wars for the Xbox 360. While it was a decent game, it seemed a bit short and lacking depth. I’m hoping the Xbone One sequel, Halo Wars 2, will be an improvement. The one major thing going against this game right from the start is that RTS games are usually ...[Read More]

E3 Impressions: Quake: Champions

The classic FPS renaissance is in full swing, and Quake: Champions is the next title in line. After the runaway success of last year’s Doom and 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, you just knew it was only a matter of time before Bethesda dipped back to the nostalgia well for this classic. Behold Quake Champions, an arena-based twitch FPS that harkens back to the days of Quake 4 Arena and Unreal To...[Read More]

Halo Wars 2 Open Beta Starting Next Week

An open beta for Microsoft’s Halo Wars 2 will begin on June 13th, the same day as Microsoft’s E3 2016 presentation, according to an Xbox One product page for the game. The product page, spotted by Mondo Xbox, states that the real-time strategy game will run its multiplayer beta for a week. It only mentions the Xbox One for the beta; there is no word on a similar test for the PC. There is also no m...[Read More]
